Impact Detroit, which takes place June 20-22, 2017 in Detroit, Michigan, is a pre-Gather mission opportunity designed around the five priorities of the ECC. The Detroit Metro churches have taken each of the five priorities and created an impactful combination of workshops and hands-on experiences. The hope is for Covenant churches across the country to partner with the Detroit churches to make a positive impact on the city of Detroit and that participants would go back to positively impact their home churches.

Beginning on Tuesday evening, June 20 with dinner, worship, and orientation, Impact Detroit continues Wednesday and Thursday with six mission opportunities hosted at eight different sites (seven Detroit area churches and one retreat center). Each site highlights a specific priority, aims to impart a specific skill set, and provides its participants with a view into the ministry and life of a Detroit church. Participants may choose between sites that offer workshops on Wednesday and practical application on Thursday, sites that are a mixture of workshops and practical experience throughout the two days, or sites that are mainly experiential– filled with hands on possibilities. Mobility requirements and age appropriateness vary by site. Some sites are designed for 18 and older, while other sites have components for those as young as five. Youth groups are welcome.

For Impact Detroit participants that go on to be delegates for Gather, please consider staying through Sunday morning, June 25. There will be an opportunity to take part in the execution of the special community outreach event that will have been planned at the Start and Strengthen Churches site “Thinking Like a Church Plant.”

Locations
Site #1: Think Like a Church Plant

Priority: Start and Strengthen Churches

Ages: High School+

Locations:

Life Church Canton

7001 N Haggerty Road, Canton, MI 48187

Life Church Livonia

For churches aged 0-200, thinking like a church plant can impact the life and health of your church as measured by the ten Healthy Missional Markers. Church plants regularly live and walk on the risky, yet faith filled, line between success and failure. Come and participate in workshops that will help you to think like a church plant and take part in a practical experience that will give you a taste of what it means to walk that line.

Wednesday: Workshops
Thursday: Planning a community outreach event that will take place on Sunday, June 25; going door to door to invite the community; manning a booth at a community festival to promote the outreach event.

This site is meant to be a complete  two-day experience.

Site #2: Leading With Integrity and Impact

Ages: 5+

Priority: Develop Leaders

Location:

Citadel of Faith Covenant Church
Visit website
1419 W Warren Avenue, Detroit, MI 48208

As a leader, you may feel you have more questions than answers. The Wednesday workshops for this site will help to answer questions about how to personally lead with integrity, raising up tomorrow’s leaders, choosing the best organizational structure for your church, and how to navigate today’s murky legal waters that support and surround the church. On Thursday you will experience leading through serving as you serve the neighborhood with lawn care and light home repair. For those with limited mobility, there will be a less physical option available. Other choices available for this site include: children’s program for both days (ages 5-11) and lawn care and light home repair for Wednesday.

Wednesday: Workshops/Children’s Program (ages 5-11)/Lawn care and light home repair
Thursday: Lawn care and light home repair/Children’s program (ages 5-11)

This site is meant to be a complete two-day experience. Participants, however, may choose the lawn care/light home repair for Wednesday or Thursday when combined with either day from site #4. Youth groups may combine Wednesday (lawn care and light home repair) with any Thursday site that has a practical experience (i.e. #1, #4, #6).

Site #3: CANCELED
Site #4: Building a Better Brightmoor

Priority: Love Mercy, Do Justice

Ages: 5+

Location:

City Covenant Church Detroit
Visit website
13624 Stout Street, Detroit, MI 48223

This site is mostly experiential. You will have an immediate, direct impact on the health and safety of the Brightmoor community, the poorest neighborhood in the city of Detroit. We are partnering with Covenant Community Care (a faith-based, federally qualified health center that serves the people of metro Detroit regardless of their ability to pay) to bring in medical and dental care. We will have a Lego City VBS for children, and we will clean up and restore a local park. At this site participants may choose to go door to door and invite the neighborhood to the church for health care, pray with the neighborhood people who come, take part in the Lego City VBS (adults as VBS leaders, children as basic builders– ages 5-9 or construction crew– ages 10-13) and/or help to clean up and restore a local park.

Wednesday: Neighborhood invite and prayer, Lego VBS, park cleanup
Thursday: Neighborhood invite and prayer, Lego VBS, park cleanup

Participants may choose this site for either Wednesday or Thursday, or both. The VBS program is progressive from Wednesday through Thursday.
